What government oversees banks?
Share This Page: The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) is an independent bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The OCC charters, regulates, and supervises all national banks, federal savings associations, and federal branches and agencies of foreign banks.
All banks fall under the supervision and regulation of their chartering authority, at either the state or federal level.
Generally, central banks are not government agencies and operate independently of the government; however, many central bank positions can be appointed by the government, and they are required to abide by the law, just as they are protected by the law.
There are numerous agencies assigned to regulate and oversee financial institutions and financial markets in the United States, including the Federal Reserve Board (FRB), the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC), and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The Federal Reserve shares supervisory and regulatory responsibility for domestic banks with other federal regulators and with individual state banking departments. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the case of a broker-dealer, and state insurance regulators in the case of an insurance company.
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) - The FDIC insures state-chartered banks that are not members of the Federal Reserve System. The FDIC also insures deposits in banks and federal savings associations in the event of bank failure. The FDIC's Consumer Protection page provides information and assistance.
You can submit your complaint or inquiry online at the FDIC Information and Support Center at https://ask.fdic.gov/fdicinformationandsupportcenter/s/. Alternatively, you can submit a complaint via mail to the Consumer Response Unit at 1100 Walnut Street, Box#11, Kansas City, MO 64106.
Fortunately for their uninsured depositors, the FDIC used its emergency authority to backstop all deposits to quell depositor anxieties and prevent further bank runs.
The framers of the Federal Reserve Act developed a central banking system that would broadly represent the public interest. CONGRESS oversees the Federal Reserve System and its entities. BOARD OF GOVERNORS is an independent agency of the federal government.
Bank supervision at the federal level is carried out by three agencies: the Federal Reserve, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). State banking agencies also supervise certain banks.
Who supervises the functioning of banks?
Answer: The Reserve Bank of India monitors all the banks in India to check whether they are maintaining a minimum cash balance. Ensure banks do not just give loans to profit-making businesses or traders, but also provide loans to small cultivators, small-scale industries, and small borrowers.
The Board of Directors of the FDIC manages operations to fulfill the agency's mission. Each member of the five-person Board is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.
U.S. banking regulation addresses privacy, disclosure, fraud prevention, anti-money laundering, anti-terrorism, anti-usury lending, and the promotion of lending to lower-income populations. Some individual cities also enact their own financial regulation laws (for example, defining what constitutes usurious lending).
At the state level, each state has an agency or agencies that are charged with supervising and regulating state-chartered banks and thrifts. For example, in California, financial institutions are regulated by: Department of Financial Institutions.
Several different regulatory bodies exist from the Federal Reserve Board which oversees the commercial banking sector to FINRA and the SEC which monitor brokers and stock exchanges.
The Board of Governors--located in Washington, D.C.--is the governing body of the Federal Reserve System. It is run by seven members, or "governors," who are nominated by the President of the United States and confirmed in their positions by the U.S. Senate.
The Federal Trade Commission enforces a variety of antitrust and consumer protection laws affecting virtually every area of commerce, with some exceptions concerning banks, insurance companies, non-profits, transportation and communications common carriers, air carriers, and some other entities.
File banking and credit complaints with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If contacting your bank directly does not help, visit the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) complaint page to: See which specific banking and credit services and products you can complain about through the CFPB.
A bank account freeze means you can't take or transfer money out of the account. Bank accounts are typically frozen for suspected illegal activity, a creditor seeking payment, or by government request. A frozen account may also be a sign that you've been a victim of identity theft.

Can banks seize your money if economy fails?
Generally, money kept in a bank account is safe—even during a recession. However, depending on factors such as your balance amount and the type of account, your money might not be completely protected. For instance, Silicon Valley Bank likely had billions of dollars in uninsured deposits at the time of its collapse.
Should I pull my money out of my bank? It doesn't make sense to take all your money out of a bank, said Jay Hatfield, CEO at Infrastructure Capital Advisors and portfolio manager of the InfraCap Equity Income ETF. But make sure your bank is insured by the FDIC, which most large banks are.
"Bank jugging" or simply "jugging” refers to a scheme in which an offender or group of offenders follows bank customers suspected of having large quantities of cash as they leave banks or other financial institutions.
Article I, Section 8, Clause 5: [The Congress shall have Power . . . ] To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures; . . .
U.S. Senate: Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.
