The Brazilian economy rebounded strongly after the Covid-19 pandemic. Resilient domestic demand, supported by social transfers, continues to drive growth. Inflation is decreasing, providing room for further monetary policy easing.
Brazil's economic outlook is stable and the risk of serious macroeconomic instability is manageable. Brazil has a high level of government debt (which exceeded 85% of GDP in gross terms at end-2022) and a large public sector deficit (which the International Monetary Fund forecasts to reach 7% of GDP in 2023).
SAO PAULO, March 1 (Reuters) - Brazil ended 2023 with economic growth of 2.9%, official data showed on Friday, way above what economists expected for most of last year but maintaining in the fourth quarter a slowing trend that should cripple its expansion in 2024.
Falling commodity prices, political turmoil, and unaddressed structural challenges led to an economic recession, with real GDP growth falling to an average of -0.3 percent between 2014 and 2019 and -3.3 percent in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But the level of consumer debt has ballooned into a national crisis. As of July, 72 million people, about a third of Brazil's population, were saddled with nomes sujos — “dirty names” — meaning they'd defaulted on their debt, according to the credit bureau Serasa.
