What percent of millionaires stick to their budget?
That's why 93% of the millionaires we studied say they stick to the budgets they create, compared to 77% of the gener- al population. Millionaires know that build- ing and maintaining wealth come down to how well they manage their money—and sticking to a budget is the most basic way to do that.
You have to sit down at the start of each month and give every dollar an assignment—and then stick to it. When our team completed The National Study of Millionaires, we found that 93% of millionaires said they stick to the budgets they create. Ninety-three percent!
Choose the right career
And one crucial detail to note: Millionaire status doesn't equal a sky-high salary. “Only 31% averaged $100,000 a year over the course of their career,” the study found, “and one-third never made six figures in any single working year of their career.”
There are about 336 million people in the U.S. With 24.5 million of them being millionaires, the odds that someone in the U.S. will end up a millionaire come in at around 7.29%.
However, the truth is, even the richest people in the world budget and plan their finances. Having a solid financial plan isn't just important for those who are struggling to keep their finances in check. In fact, it's the foundation of a stable financial future no matter what your income may be.
Real estate investment has long been a cornerstone of financial success, with approximately 90% of millionaires attributing their wealth in part to real estate holdings.
Ninety percent of all millionaires become so through owning real estate. More money has been made in real estate than in all industrial investments combined. The wise young man or wage earner of today invests his money in real estate.
Earning more than $100,000 per year would put you well ahead of the median American household, which brings in $74,784 as of 2021. Assuming you're an individual without dependents, that salary would qualify you as upper class, according to three different definitions (Brookings, Urban Institute and Pew Research).
According to the US Census Bureau, the majority of Americans (54.98%) make $50,000 per year or less, while only 18% of individual Americans make $100,000 per year or more. This means that over 80% of Americans make less than $100,000 per year.

Are millionaires top 1%?
As of the second quarter 2023, the average American household had wealth of $1.09 million. The average wealth of households in the top 1 percent was about $33.4 million. In the top 0.1 percent, the average household had wealth of more than $1.52 billion.
Slightly over 20% of families aged 55-74 have net worths above $1 million, while well over 10% of those aged 45-54 and 75 and over millionaires, according to the Fed. Meanwhile, just 1% of those under 35 are millionaires.
Characteristic | Ratio of millionaire households per capita |
---|---|
California | 8.51% |
New Hampshire | 8.47% |
Virginia | 8.31% |
Alaska | 8.18% |
While millionaires are less likely to have a cash back card than the average American, they're more likely to have every other major type of credit card, including travel rewards cards, balance transfer cards, gas and grocery cards, and sign-up bonus cards.
The 50-30-20 rule recommends putting 50% of your money toward needs, 30% toward wants, and 20% toward savings. The savings category also includes money you will need to realize your future goals.
According to an Experian Automotive study cited by the Financial Times, while society's rich are more likely to buy luxury brand cars than its less well-off, 61% of people who earn more than $250,000 are more likely to be driving Hondas, Fords and Toyotas.
Roughly three out of 100 people in the U.S. are millionaires, but your chances of becoming a millionaire depend very much on your age, your race, and your education.
According to a blog by renowned penny stock investor Timothy Sykes, the average millionaire goes bankrupt at least 3.5 times. The reasons rich people go broke are not all that different than the reasons anyone goes broke. It almost always comes down to a combination of bad judgment, bad luck and bad timing.
Out of a population of 8.1 billion people, just 62.4 million are millionaires. That's 0.8% of the population. There are 8.4 million people globally with a net worth of $5 million or more. Having this level of wealth would put you in the top 0.1%.
In the U.S., it may take you $5.81 million to be in the top 1%, but it takes a minimum net worth of $30 million to be considered among the ultra-high net worth crowd. As of the end of 2023, this ultra-high net worth population is on the rise, reaching 626,000 globally, up from just over 600,000 a year earlier.
Who is a mini millionaire?
Nonetheless, not just anyone can be a mini-millionaire. Mini-millionaires, whom Zumburn describes as “upper middle class” rather than rich, typically make between $150,000 and $250,000 per year. That's more income than that of fourth fifths (78.9% to be exact) of U.S. households in 2022.
You need more money than ever to enter the ranks of the top 1% of the richest Americans. To join the club of the wealthiest citizens in the U.S., you'll need at least $5.8 million, up about 15% up from $5.1 million one year ago, according to global real estate company Knight Frank's 2024 Wealth Report.
$100,000 a year is how much an hour? If you make $100,000 a year, your hourly salary would be $48.08.
If you had an income of $200,000, that would put you in the top 12% of household incomes or the top 5% of individual incomes in 2022. Though I prefer household income over individual income, no matter how you cut it, $200k a year puts you on the higher end of the income spectrum.
When you remove demographics such as infants, students, and stay-at-home spouses and focus only on full-time workers, around 18% of all earners in the US make at least six figures. Conversely, the median American household income in 2023 was approximately $44,225.
