What type of funds are UCITS?
The term “undertaking for collective investment in transferable securities” (UCITS) should not require much explanation, it speaks for itself: It is an undertaking for collective investment (or “investment fund”) which invests in securities, i.e. in stocks, bonds, stocks and bonds, short term treasury instruments and ...
A UCITS must provide proper notice to investors in the form of a Key Investor Information Document, usually located on the fund's website. The fund must also be approved.
UCITS is a set of voluntary rules which many ETFs follow. ETFs which are UCITS compliant must follow minimum standards - that includes holding a diversified portfolio, publishing clear guidance on their charges and taking steps to safeguard investors' money.
SICAVs are often contrasted with SICAFs. SICAFs are similar to closed-end funds in the U.S. SICAFs are an acronym for Société d'Investissem*nt à Capital Fixe. They are traded on public market exchanges and operate with a fixed number of shares. UCITS structured SICAVs are actively cross-border marketed in Europe.
The Eurekahedge UCITS Hedge Fund Index (Bloomberg Ticker - EHFI547) is an equally weighted index of 631 constituent funds.
Vanguard S&P 500 UCITS ETF (VUSA)
This Fund seeks to track the performance of the Index, a widely recognised benchmark of U.S. stock market performance that is comprised of the stocks of large U.S. companies.
What Is the Difference Between UCITS and Non-UCITS? Non-UTICS funds do not comply with UCITS guidelines. They are likely not open-ended and liquid, one of the more significant requirements for a fund to be UCITS compliant.
What are UCITS funds? UCITS is an acronym for Undertakings for the Collective Investment in Transferable Securities. It is a regulatory framework for the creation and distribution of mutual funds in the European Union. UCITS funds simply refer to mutual funds that adhere to the UCITS framework.
You can purchase UCITS funds through a U.S.-based fund manager. That said, only an authorized EU-based management company can oversee that fund. So a U.S. fund manager either must set up such a company or partner with one. It's not a roadblock, but it is an extra step.
No single asset can represent more than 10% of the fund's assets; holdings of more than 5% cannot in aggregate exceed 40% of the fund's assets. This is known as the "5/10/40" rule.
Why are UCITS popular?
Overall, UCITS has played a vital role in establishing European investment schemes as credible and accessible instruments that are popular across Europe, Asia and Latin America.
European-domiciled UCITS ETFs were ready with their new KIDs when PRIIPs came into force alongside the MiFID II rules at the beginning of 2018. However US-domiciled ETFs did not comply and, as they mostly serve the US market, producing EU-approved information at their own cost is not a priority.
Hedge funds are largely unconstrained in their investment style and the instruments traded. Alt UCITS funds are subject to additional rules on fund terms, concentration, liquidity, portfolio transparency and instruments traded. They also tend to have lower fees than the “two and 20” seen in traditional hedge funds.
Methodology and investor profile
For the purpose of this survey, “alternative UCITS” refers to absolute return strategies (including hedge fund and alternative beta / risk premia strategies) run within a UCITS compliant framework.
Alt UCITS – also known as liquid alternatives and UCITS hedge funds – are generally understood to be collective investment funds that can utilise derivatives as part of their investment policy and implement strategies akin to those of hedge funds.
The closest UCITS equivalent to VTI ETF is Vanguard S&P 500 UCITS ETF, with accumulating share classes in GBP and EUR, and distributing share classes in GBP, EUR and CHF. Vanguard S&P 500 Vanguard excludes Small and some Mid-Caps.
UCITS are a very successful product: there are more than 30,000 UCITS funds in the EU which represent over €9 trillion of assets under management. ▸ To report about an infringement of national provisions transposing the UCITS Directive, please consult the Whistleblowers section.
The Fund employs a passive management – or indexing – investment approach, through physical acquisition of securities, and seeks to track the performance of the Standard and Poor's 500 Index (the “Index”). The Index is comprised of large-sized company stocks in the US.
A UCITS may acquire no more than 25% of the units/shares of the underlying UCITS or UCI (or the aggregate amount invested in one or more sub-funds of an umbrella UCITS).
This has been enshrined in what is commonly known as the 5/10/40 rule which is that a UCITS may invest no more than 10% of its net assets in transferable securities or money market instruments issued by the same body, provided that the total value of transferable securities or money market instruments held in issuing ...
Is UCITS a unit trust?
A unit trust may be authorised as a UCITS (in which case they must be open-ended). UCITS are subject to the UCITS regime (which includes the Central Bank of Ireland's UCITS Regulations) and the provisions of the Unit Trusts Act 1990.
UCITS or 'undertakings for the collective investment in transferable securities' are investment funds regulated at European Union level. They account for around 75% of all collective investments by small investors in Europe. The legislative instrument covering these funds is Directive 2014/91/EU.
Capital base
The net assets of an FCP may not be less than EUR 1,250,000. This minimum must be reached within a period of six months following its authorisation.
UCITS are a type of non-U.S. investment registered on a foreign exchange. UCITS aren't considered U.S. assets and therefore aren't subject to U.S. estate tax.
At the 5% limit, the fund would require a minimum of 20 stocks (or other transferable asset) in the portfolio. If the limit is raised to 10% as per bullet point #2, 4 stocks can be held with a weighting of 10% as they do not exceed the 40% limit as per bullet point #3.
