What happens to money market funds if debt ceiling isn t raised?
Are your money market funds about to get steamrolled if Congress fumbles the debt ceiling and the U.S. Treasury defaults on its debt? In the bleakest scenario, some money market mutual funds could “break the buck.” That's when a fund's price per share—or its so-called net asset value (NAV)—slides below $1.
Since MMFs largely invest in US Treasury bills, their status as a safe and attractive alternative to bank deposits would be threatened if the national debt ceiling stalemate cannot be resolved in time.
Like other deposit accounts, money market accounts are insured by the FDIC or NCUA, up to $250,000 held by the same owner or owners. Money market accounts tend to pay you higher interest rates than other types of savings accounts.
Gold: The Traditional Safe Haven
“If the debt ceiling is not raised and the government defaults on its debt obligations, investors may turn to gold and other precious metals to protect their wealth.”
Insurance. Since money market funds are investment products, they're not insured against loss by the FDIC or NCUA. Your investment could lose money.
A15: If a money market mutual fund held securities on which the U.S. Treasury defaulted on the payment of interest or principal, then the fund would need to sell those defaulted securities, unless the fund's board of trustees determines that disposing of the securities would not be in the best interests of the fund.
If the security accounts for 0.5 percent or more of the fund's portfolio, the fund also must report the default to the SEC. In addition, the US government's failure to pay its obligations could trigger a severe downgrade of its short-term credit rating by NRSROs.
It's technically possible to lose money in a market account, but not in the same way you can lose money in an investment account. Depending on the terms of your money market account, you could lose value to fees and inflation.
If you want to maximize how much interest you earn on your savings, a money market account can be a good option compared to other savings accounts because it usually earns a higher rate of interest. Plus, if you need quick access to your money, you can do so in a variety of ways.
Money market funds are ideal for short-term saving because they invest in highly liquid securities with the objective of capital preservation and income. Money market fund yields have risen above 5%, benefiting from the Federal Reserve raising interest rates over the last couple years.
Are money markets safe if the US defaults on debt?
Even if the Treasury does default, money market fund experts point to several reasons why a repeat of the Reserve Primary Fund debacle is extremely unlikely. A U.S. debt default would affect only a small number of Treasury securities, namely those that mature on the date that the Treasury's cash runs out.
If you want to shift into cash, the safest option may be to sock away the money in a high-interest savings account at an FDIC-insured bank that pays a rate of more than 4% or in certificates of deposit, experts say.
Tried and true basics. "We're advising people to prepare for a potential default as you would for an impending recession," says Anna Helhoski of NerdWallet. That means tamping down on excess spending, making a budget, and shoring up emergency savings to cover at least three months of living expenses.
However, this only happens very rarely, but because money market funds are not FDIC-insured, meaning that money market funds can lose money.
As stated above, money market funds are often considered less risky than their stock and bond counterparts. That's because these types of funds typically invest in low-risk vehicles such as certificates of deposit (CDs), Treasury bills (T-Bills), and short-term commercial paper.
At least 99.5% of their assets are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. While money market funds aren't FDIC-insured, investments held in brokerage accounts (including money market funds) may be insured by SIPC.
Default risk is the failure to repay on securities, time deposits or repurchase agreements. Downgrade risk is the risk that the credit rating of a security or issuer may be reduced by a credit rating agency.
No investment is 100% safe from a default, not even certificates of deposit. Stay diversified and keep up with sound financial habits.
On Sept. 16, 2008, the Reserve Primary Fund broke the buck when its net asset value (NAV) fell to $0.97 cents per share. It was one of the first times in the history of investing that a retail money market fund had failed to maintain a $1 per share NAV. The implications sent shockwaves through the industry.
Money market funds, like mutual funds, are neither FDIC insured nor guaranteed by the U.S. government or government agency and are not deposits or obligations of, or guaranteed by, any bank.
Can Vanguard Federal money market fund lose money?
Can I lose money when I invest in money market funds? Yes. Although money market funds seek to maintain a stable $1 share price, capital preservation is not guaranteed.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), an independent government agency, insures deposit accounts—checking accounts, savings accounts, money market accounts that don't contain invested funds, and CDs, for example—at most banks and savings and loans institutions.
Some money market accounts come with minimum account balances to be able to earn the higher rate of interest. Six to 12 months of living expenses are typically recommended for the amount of money that should be kept in cash in these types of accounts for unforeseen emergencies and life events.
