How many times have money markets broke the buck?
How much should a money market investor be concerned with that risk? Smith: Since their introduction in 1971, money market funds have broken the buck just two times.
The Community Bankers US Government Fund broke the buck in 1994, paying investors 96 cents per share. This was only the second failure in the then 23-year history of money funds and there were no further failures for 14 years.
Many accounts have monthly fees
Another drawback to remember is that while they have high yields, money market accounts can also come with cumbersome fees. Many banks and credit unions will impose monthly fees just for the upkeep of your account.
Over the 9/2/2008 to 10/7/ 2008 time frame, government money market fund assets increased by $409 billion (44 percent) as prime fund assets fell by $498 billion (24 percent). At this point, the market for commercial paper became illiquid.
A15: If a money market mutual fund held securities on which the U.S. Treasury defaulted on the payment of interest or principal, then the fund would need to sell those defaulted securities, unless the fund's board of trustees determines that disposing of the securities would not be in the best interests of the fund.
On Sept. 16, 2008, the Reserve Primary Fund broke the buck when its net asset value (NAV) fell to $0.97 cents per share. It was one of the first times in the history of investing that a retail money market fund had failed to maintain a $1 per share NAV. The implications sent shockwaves through the industry.
Both CDs and MMAs are federally insured savings accounts, so they're equally safe. Up to at least $250,000 gets insured in your name across your individually owned accounts at one bank or credit union. (Learn more about federal deposit insurance.)
It's technically possible to lose money in a market account, but not in the same way you can lose money in an investment account. Depending on the terms of your money market account, you could lose value to fees and inflation.
While money market funds typically invest in lower-risk assets, experts say it's important to know the funds aren't risk free. “It's a rarity that such funds lose value,” said CFP Randy Bruns, founder of Model Wealth in Naperville, Illinois.
Money market accounts tend to pay you higher interest rates than other types of savings accounts. On the other hand, money market accounts usually limit the number of transactions you can make by check, debit card, or electronic transfer.
What happens if a money market fund breaks the buck?
Money market funds seek stability and security with the goal of never losing money and keeping net asset value (NAV) at $1. This one-buck NAV baseline gives rise to the phrase "break the buck," meaning that if the value falls below the $1 NAV level, some of the original investment is gone and investors will lose money.
Vanguard Cash Reserves Federal Money Market Fund and Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund: You could lose money by investing in the Fund. Although the Fund seeks to preserve the value of your investment at $1.00 per share, it cannot guarantee it will do so.
While money market funds are not FDIC-insured, only two money market funds have failed. The first was a small institutional fund in 1994 and the other was the collapse of the Reserve Fund in September 2009, triggered by the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy.
Which money market funds are in the most danger? Money market funds whose portfolios are entirely made up of U.S. Treasury securities would be most at risk in a debt ceiling crisis.
While money market funds are considered to be one of the safest investments, they have dipped below the target share value of $1 (known as “breaking the buck”) during a few volatile markets or due to changes in inflation and interest rates but have quickly recovered.
You could lose money by investing in the fund. Although the fund seeks to preserve the value of your investment at $1.00 per share, it cannot guarantee it will do so. An investment in the fund is not insured or guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any other government agency.
On Tuesday, September 16, 2008, the $62.6 billion Reserve Primary Fund "broke the buck." That meant the fund managers couldn't maintain its share price at the $1 value. 1 Money market funds used that value as a benchmark.
Right now, investors can earn a competitive yield with low risk. "With short-term interest rates above 5%, money market funds have again become a meaningful part of the investment landscape," says James Dowd, CEO at North Capital.
Stability & safety
While not insured by the FDIC, the funds are required by federal regulations to invest in short-maturity, low-risk investments, making them less prone to market fluctuations than many other types of investments.
If you're saving for a medium- or long-term goal, want to earn a fixed interest rate and want the assurance that your money is safe, a CD can be a good investment. If you need access to your money, a money market account would be more fitting as it offers greater liquidity.
Why is CD not a good financial investment?
If inflation is rising, it could outpace the rate of return you're earning on your CDs, especially in a low interest rate environment. This means even though your savings is growing, it won't stretch as far when it's time to spend it. Notably, this is also a risk when keeping money in savings and money market accounts.
Inflation erodes the purchasing power of your money over time, and if your CD's interest rate isn't keeping up with inflation, you're essentially losing money. For example, if your CD earns a 2% annualized return but inflation is running at 3%, you're actually losing 1% of your purchasing power every year.
Cash equivalents are financial instruments that are almost as liquid as cash and are popular investments for millionaires. Examples of cash equivalents are money market mutual funds, certificates of deposit, commercial paper and Treasury bills. Some millionaires keep their cash in Treasury bills.
If you're using your money market account as your emergency fund, experts recommend keeping at least three to six months' worth of expenses accessible.
If you want to maximize how much interest you earn on your savings, a money market account can be a good option compared to other savings accounts because it usually earns a higher rate of interest. Plus, if you need quick access to your money, you can do so in a variety of ways.
