It's easy to get discouraged when looking at the CFP® exam pass rates, which typically hover around the 60%-65% percentile for first-time takers.
However, historically, the passing rate for the CFP exam has been around 62-67%, which means that the average score for those who pass the exam is likely to be in the range of 65-70%. It's worth noting that the CFP exam is known for being challenging, so achieving a passing score is a significant accomplishment.
The easy answer is that the CFA exam is much more difficult than the CFP. Not only is the CFA a more intensive exam, the time and study preparations are much more extensive and cover a much wider depth and breadth of material. The CFA exam contains 3 levels that are each taken on separate days.
Exam questions are written by volunteer subject-matter experts in the field of financial planning. The overall pass rate of the CFP Exam typically hovers between 60%-65%, with first-time test takers faring slightly better. The exam is typically offered at Prometric testing centers in March, July, and November.
If you are 10 weeks away from the CFP review class starting and you need about 100-125 hours to finish the pre-study materials, then you need to average 10-12 hours per week leading up to the review. That means you'll need to study for about 2.5 – 3 months (100hrs/10hrs per week) before attending the review class.
Case study quiz: The case study quiz has 10 questions, with an allotted time of 60 minutes. Final exam: The final exam has 85 questions, with an allotted time of 3 hours. (Students who do not pass the final exam on the first attempt will be granted a second and final attempt to earn a score of 70% or higher.)
CFP Board today announced the results of the July 2023 CFP® Certification Exam. The exam was administered during a July 11-18 testing window to 2,926 candidates, with 6% of candidates testing remotely. The pass rate for the July exam was 67%.
CFP Board recommends you spend at least 250 hours studying for the exam. While that sounds overwhelming, the time goes pretty quickly between pre-study, the Candidate Handbook, required education courses, question bank time, review, practice exams, and your own preparations.
What is CFP Board's policy for retaking the CFP® exam? You may attempt the CFP® exam a lifetime maximum of 5 times. (If you attempted the exam 4 or more times prior to January 1, 2012, you will be permitted a maximum of 2 additional attempts.)
What pays more CFA or CFP?
– The CFA Institute says a CFA charter holder can earn between $126,000 and $177,000. – Comparably.com data from Feb. 2023 shows the average CFP salary in the U.S. is $121,099. The total range is between $39,300 and $187,200.
It really depends on your preferred career route: if you're into financial planning, CFP is the clear choice. If you're less sure but keen on a career in finance, perhaps CFA is a better choice for a broader finance base before you decide, although it is notably a more difficult qualification to get.
The CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) exam is recognized as one of the most rigorous exams globally. Annually, more than 100,000 candidates undertake this comprehensive assessment.

The CFP and the Series 7 are two qualifications that may be of interest to financial professionals. In fact, a CFP could also look to complete the Series 7 exam. However, they serve different purposes. The CFP is for experienced financial planners looking to set themselves apart from the competition.
In 2022, the cumulative pass rate for all four sections of the CPA Exam ranged between 45-61%. The pass rate for the CPA Exam was 54% overall. Comparatively, CFP is easier than CPA. The historical pass rate has been above 60%, which indicates that the tests are of a difficulty level that is considered to be moderate.

How long should you study for CFP?
CFP Board recommends you spend at least 250 hours studying for the exam. While that sounds overwhelming, the time goes pretty quickly between pre-study, the Candidate Handbook, required education courses, question bank time, review, practice exams, and your own preparations.
Compared to broader designations out there like the CFP exam, though, the CFP exam is way, way harder and more complex than the Series 65. They're not even in the same camp as each other.
The CFP® exam is a 170-question, multiple-choice test that consists of two 3-hour sections during one day. Each section is divided into two distinct subsections.
