Is 1000 mcg the same as 1000 mg?
In micrograms prefix “micro-” stands for 10-6, meaning a microgram equals 0.000001 g. Therefore, we consider 1,000 mcg to equal 1 mg.
The difference between a microgram and a milligram is simply a difference in size. They both measure weight, and milligrams are bigger. One microgram is one-thousandth of a milligram.
To convert micrograms to milligrams, divide the value by 1000. So, to convert 800 micrograms to milligrams, you would do 800 / 1000 = 0.8 milligrams.
Therefore, 1000 micrograms is equal to 1 milligram.
In layman's terms, a milligram is 1,000 times more powerful. Or, you'd have to take 1,000 micrograms to equal 1 milligram. Back to our customer's example. He was taking 10,000 micrograms (mcg) of biotin – the equivalent of 10 mg.
1000 mcg is about 400 times as much as 2.4 mcg. However, the B12 molecule is too large to cross from the gut to the blood unaided. It needs to be carried across the gut wall by a special protein called Intrinsic Factor. And that mechanism has a limited capacity.
Please remember that 'more' isn't necessarily better in nutrition. Many nutrients are only required in microgram amounts and taking larger amounts could be unnecessary or even detrimental to health.
In micrograms prefix “micro-” stands for 10-6, meaning a microgram equals 0.000001 g. Therefore, we consider 1,000 mcg to equal 1 mg. For conversion of mcg to mg units, we multiply the mass in milligrams by 1,000 to convert to micrograms and divide the number of milligrams by 0.001 to convert to micrograms.
Therefore, 1000 micrograms is equal to 1 milligram.
Milligrams (mg) | Micrograms (μg) |
---|---|
80 mg | 80000 μg |
90 mg | 90000 μg |
100 mg | 100000 μg |
1000 mg | 1000000 μg |
Is 1000 mcg a day too much?
A common dose of OTC vitamin B12 is 1,000 mcg each day. The risk of vitamin B12 side effects is low — even if you take too much. Your body can only absorb a small amount of vitamin B12 at a time. So any extra leaves your body when you pee.
In a 2013 study in 100 older adults, supplementing with 500 mcg of vitamin B12 for 8 weeks was found to normalize B12 levels in 90% of participants. Higher doses of up to 1,000 mcg, or 1 milligram (mg), may be necessary for some ( 13 ).
A: Mcg is microgram.... 1,000,000th of a gram. mg milligram is 1000th of a gram. 1000 mcg = 1 mg. Things that are reported in mcg are needed in very small amounts in the body.
To prevent deficiency, the amount taken by mouth is based on normal daily recommended intakes: Adults and teenagers—30 to 100 micrograms (mcg) per day. Children 7 to 10 years of age—30 mcg per day.
There's no established maximum amount of biotin due to a lack of evidence that it's considered toxic (dangerous) at certain levels. In various studies, there were no reported side effects when people took up to 10 mg per day of oral biotin. Still, some people develop symptoms if they take excess biotin.
Health Risks from Excessive Biotin
Several studies have found no adverse effects of 10–50 mg/day biotin, and up to 200 mg/day oral biotin or 20 mg/day intravenously in patients with biotinidase deficiency do not produce symptoms of toxicity [1,10].
Safety and side effects
When taken at appropriate doses, vitamin B-12 supplements are generally considered safe. While the recommended daily amount of vitamin B-12 for adults is 2.4 micrograms, higher doses have been found to be safe. Your body absorbs only as much as it needs, and any excess passes through your urine.
Even the lowest doses in B12 supplements are many times the recommended dietary allowance. Doses up to 1,000 mcg, though unnecessary, aren't harmful.
There is no upper intake limit for vitamin B12 because there is no known toxicity [2]. Most vitamin B12 supplements provide a range of strengths between 500 to 5,000 mcg [2].
Life Stage | Recommended Amount |
---|---|
Teens 14–18 years | 2.4 mcg |
Adults | 2.4 mcg |
Pregnant teens and women | 2.6 mcg |
Breastfeeding teens and women | 2.8 mcg |
Is it OK to take 10000 mcg of biotin a day?
Although Mayo Clinic states that 10,000 mcg is a safe dose, as no adverse side effects have been noted to date and our NEW Biotin is now 12,000 mcg... reassuringly, even “mega doses” of 300,000 mcg found no side effects in neurological research.
But there's no evidence of high levels of biotin being harmful or causing toxicity, which is why you'll commonly see biotin supplements containing 5,000 to 10,000 mcg. (These levels ensure your body gets as much biotin as it needs and absorbs it in the small intestines.)
In addition, vitamin A is present in supplements such as multivitamins and fish liver oils. How much vitamin A is enough? Until 2001, the dietary reference intake for adult men was 5,000 international units (IU) a day, or 1,500 micrograms (mcg). Levels of up to 10,000 IU (3,000 mcg) have been considered safe.
1 milligram = 1000 micrograms. 2 milligrams = 2000 micrograms. To convert micrograms to milligrams, divide the value by 1000. So, to convert 800 micrograms to milligrams, you would do 800 / 1000 = 0.8 milligrams.
